30 PROGRAMAS DE TELEVISIÓN PARA MEJORAR EL INGLÉS DE TU HIJO
A veces te preguntas ¿qué programas de televisión pueden ayudar a mi hijo a aprender inglés? Y ¿cuáles programas ayudarán y cuáles son una pérdida de tiempo? A la mayoría de mis estudiantes y sus padres les gusta que yo tenga un acento británico y a menudo me preguntan ¿qué puede ver mi niño en casa para mejorar su nivel de inglés? ¡Aquí tienes la respuesta!
Hemos elaborado 5 listas con 5 programas que son perfectos para ayudar a tu hijo a mejorar su nivel de inglés, tenga la edad que tenga; y una lista adicional que se puede ser disfrutada por toda la familia. Hemos descrito lo que puedes esperar de cada programa y el tipo de lenguaje que cada programa utiliza. También hemos subido unos clips de YouTube al final de cada apartado para que puedas ver por ti mismo como es cada programa.
Al final hemos incluido unos consejos de cómo verlos. Siéntete libre de ver todos o solo uno, pero sé amable con tu hijo. La meta no es entender todas las palabras, sino disfrutar la experiencia de ver la tele en inglés.
Do you ever wonder which television programmes can help your child learn English and which are a waste of time? Most of my students and their parents like that I have a British accent and they often ask me “What can my child watch at home to improve their English?” Here is the answer!
We’ve made 5 lists of 5 programmes that are perfect to help your child improve their English, whatever their age, and an additional list that all the family can enjoy. We’ve written descriptions of what you can expect from each programme and the type of language each programme uses. We’ve also uploaded some YouTube clips at the end of each section so you can see for yourself what each programme is like.
At the very bottom we’ve included some tips on how to watch them. Feel free to watch them all or just one, but be kind to yourself and your child. The goal is not to understand every word, but to enjoy the experience of watching TV in English.
Menos de 5 años

Peppa Pig: Peppa es una niña energética que aprende algo nuevo todos los días con la ayuda de su familia y amigos. Cada familia tiene un acento británico distinto que ayudará a tu hijo identificar las palabras en la vida real. Los niños aprenden seguir las instrucciones, a darlas y a preguntar a los demás.

Bing: Bing es un conejito encantador que está descubirnedo el mundo que le rodea. Hay mucha repetición de vocabulario y conversaciones cotidianas que tendrías con tus peques si fueses británico. El discurso es, también, un poco más lento que él de Peppa Pig.

Justin’s House: Justin entretiene a la audiencia en directo por medio del cante, del baile y crear caos en general. Hay mucha narración e interacción. Lo mejor es que los niños ven a como los niños en el auditorio se relacionan con los personajes, lo cual les anima a que participen, o por lo menos darles un mejor conocimiento del contexto.

Hey Duggee: Duggee es líder de un grupo de scouts que les ayuda a sus scouts probar cosas nuevas para que consigan sus insignias. Contiene un vocabulario sencillo mezclado con inglés británico real. Una manera fantástica para niños de aprender el inglés de forma natural y divertirse a la vez.

In the Night Garden: Visita un jardín mágico donde un grupo de juguetes aprenden compartir, ser amables y divertirse. El narrador interactúa con los personajes de la forma de que los padres hablan con sus hijos y todos los personajes tienen su propia canción que oímos una y otra vez. **Experts believe that children under 2 shouldn’t watch television as it affects their ability to concentrate in later life. In the following lists we’ve put an English rating under each programme. If your child is under 6 you can ignore these ratings as their brains learn differently to ours and the complexity of English isn’t that important as long as the speech is clear and coherent.
Peppa Pig: Peppa is an energetic toddler who learns something new every day with the help of her family and friends. All the different families have different British accents which will really help your child identify words in real life. Children learn how to follow instructions, give instructions and ask questions

Bing: Bing is a loveable young bunny who is learning about the big world around him. There’s lots of repetition of vocabulary and everyday conversations that you would have with your little ones. The speaking is also a bit slower than in Peppa Pig.

Justin’s House: Justin entertains a live audience of children by singing, dancing and creating general chaos. There’s lots of narrative and interaction. The best thing is that children see their peers interreacting with the characters which encourages them to join in, or at least gives them a better understanding of the context.

Hey Duggee: Duggee is a scout leader who helps his scouts try new things to get new badges. There is simple vocabulary mixed with real British English. A fantastic way for toddlers to learn English naturally and have fun doing so.

In the Night Garden: Visit a magical garden where a group of toys learn about sharing, being kind and having fun. The narrator uses lots of parent talk when interreacting with the characters and each character has their own song which we hear over and over again. Another thing we like are the characters’ names. The individual sounds are easy for young children to make which really encourages them to speak.

Postman Pat: Es encargado del servicio de entrega especial. Pat reparte el correo a los habitantes de su pequeño pueblo. Los Clangers hablan su propio idioma, así pues, quienes no entiendan nada de inglés, sí pueden seguir el argumento. Hay narrador que explica lo que los niños pueden ver durante el capítulo, de la misma manera que aprende tu hijo cuando le lees un cuento y está viendo los dibujos.

Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom: Sigue los contratiempos de una joven princesa hada y su mejor amigo en un reino encantado. Los personajes tienen acentos británicos y hay mucha repetición del vocabulario que ayuda a los niños aprender e identificar las palabras dichas de una manera algo diferente. Los personajes también narran lo que están haciendo y usan un montón de adjetivos. Eso realmente ayuda a establecer el orden de las nuestras palabras porque es diferente de castellano.

El vocabulario es de un nivel más alto pero la gramática es bastante básica. Los niños aprenderán mucho a describir cosas y hacer preguntas.

Big Cook Little Cook: Un programa de cocina ambientado en una cafetería donde todos los días un cliente distinto viene para una sabrosa sorpresa. Los presentadores hablan directamente al espectador a quien animan a interactuar. Los niños aprendan vocabulario sobre comida, su producción y, además, instrucciones de la cocina. Nos gusta ya que leen un cuento durante el episodio utilizando el nuevo vocabulario, lo cual es otra herramienta útil para reforzar las nuevas palabras.

Postman Pat: Head of the special delivery service, Pat delivers the post to the residents of his small town. This programme is packed full of everyday interactions that will be familiar to your child. Also, the characters give a running commentary of what is happening which helps English learning. This is all done with regional dialects and accents to train your child’s ear even better.

The Clangers: Travel to a little blue planet to meet the Clangers and watch their adventures. The Clangers speak their own language, so even if you don’t understand any English you can still follow the plot. There’s a narrator who explains what the children can see during the episode, the same way as your child learns when you are reading them a story and they’re looking at the pictures.

Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom: Follow the mishaps of a young fairy princess and her best friend in an enchanted magical kingdom. The characters have different British accents and there’s lots of repetition of vocabulary to help children learn to identify words spoken slightly differently. The characters also narrate what they are doing and use a lot of adjectives. This really helps establish our word order as it’s different from Spanish.

Little Princess: A little princess who lives in a strange castle and who is always full of energy and questions. The characters talk about what they can see or what they are doing. The vocabulary is of a higher level but the grammar is usually quite basic. Children will learn a lot about describing things and asking questions.

Big Cook Little Cook: A cookery programme set in a special café where every day a different customer comes for a tasty treat. The presenters talk directly to the viewer which encourages interaction. Children learn vocabulary about food, its production and also cooking instruction. We like that they read a story during the programme that uses the new vocabulary. This is another helpful tool to reinforce the new words.

9 – 12 años
Deadly 60: Steve Backshaw busca los 60 animales más peligrosos del mundo. Describe los animales, sus comportamientos y su entorno. Art Attack: Los niños aprenden cómo se hacen divertidas manualidades en casa. El presentador da instrucciones que a los niños estarán acostumbrados de las clases de inglés. El presentador también hace los proyectos en pantalla lo que le dará al niño contexto y le ayudará entender el inglés. Para conseguir una versión más relajada y más fácil de entender, ve HartBeat de los años 80.

Danger Mouse: Acompaña a Danger Mouse en sus graciosísimas y misiones de alto riesgos para salvar Londres y el mundo del mal. El lenguaje sí es complicado, pero las historias son aceleradas y las frases importantes son más fáciles de entender, como “Ruuuuuuun!” Así que, aún es divertido de ver incluso si no entiendes todo. Los capítulos más antiguos, los de los años 80, dar unas frases británicas muy buenas y hablan un poco más despacio.

9 – 12 years
Deadly 60: Steve Backshaw searches for the 60 most dangerous animals in the world. He describes animals, their behaviours and their environments. The language is technical but, as this programme is based on facts, the majority of the grammar needed is basic. Therefore, it’s easy to understand and a good way to learn new vocabulary.

Sarah and Duck: Sarah and Duck are best friends who go on simple but exciting adventures in their own imaginative way. Although this programme was created for children aged 4 to 6, older children love watching what random things Duck does. There isn’t much talking, asides for the narrator interacting with Sarah, so it’s easy to follow. We also like it because it uses vocabulary, that children probably already know from school, in a really natural way.

Horrid Henry: Although Horrid Henry lacks manners and hygiene and is always up to mischief, he always does the right thing in the end. The language they use in this programme is really natural and there are lots of everyday interactions that children experience, but it may be a bit advanced for some children. That said, the stories are really relatable and children (especially the naughty ones) love it.

Art Attack: Children learn how to do neat art projects at home. The presenter gives detailed instructions that children will be used to from English class. The presenter also makes the projects on screen which will give context and help your child understand the English. For a more relaxing and easier to understand version watch HartBeat from the 1980s.

Danger Mouse: Join Danger Mouse on his hilarious high-stakes missions to save London and the world from evil. The language is quite complicated, but the stories are fast paced and the important phrases are easier to understand, like “Ruuuuuun!” So, it’s still fun to watch even if you don’t understand it all. The older ones, from the 1980’s, give some really good typical British phrases and they speak a bit slower too.

13 – 16 años
The IT Crowd: Una comedia donde 3 informáticos *socialmente torpes que trabajan desde el sótano de un bloque de oficinas de lujo. Esta serie es buena para los estudiantes de inglés porque los personajes no se interrumpen mientras hablan. Usan un vocabulario coloquial en sus conversaciones mezclado con palabras científicas ocasionales que son fáciles de entender porque se tienden a asemejar al castellano.

Nadiya’s British Food Adventure: Nadiya está en una misión por todo el Reino Unido para hallar unas de las recetas más emocionantes. Tiene un acento típico de una persona joven de Londres y cuando presenta, es como si estuviera hablando con sus amigas. Este programa está lleno de adjetivos interesantes, vocabulario nuevo acerca de la comida, instrucciones y pasión por cocinar.

Man vs. Wild: Ex-SAS experto de la supervivencia, Bear Grylls nos enseña cómo sobrevivir en unos de los ambientes más extremos del planeta. Explica exactamente lo que está haciendo mientras lo hace, lo que facilita el aprendizaje de frases nuevas. Dicho esto, sí usa muchas frases británicas, que pueden no ser muy familiares, y por lo tanto lo hará un poco más difícil de seguir. Lo que nos gusta es que explica sus planes antes y durante las tareas que va a realizar. Una buena forma a dominar “be going to” para intenciones del futuro.

Our Planet: Una serie de documentales sobre naturaleza que son presentados por el mayor tesoro del Reino Unido, Sir David Attenborough. De hecho, cualquier documental de David Attenborough es televisión fantástica. Presenta los hechos de los animales y sus historias, así que, usualmente habla en los tiempos presentes. This programme is good for English learners because the characters rarely speak over one another. They use colloquial everyday conversational phrases mixed with occasional scientific words which are easy to understand because they tend to be similar to Spanish.

Nadiya’s British Food Adventure: Nadiya is on a mission around the U.K. to find some of our most exciting recipes. Nadiya has a typical accent of a young person from London and when she presents it’s as if she is talking to her friends. This programme is full of interesting adjectives, new food vocabulary, instructions and passion for cooking.

Man vs. Wild: Former SAS survival expert Bear Grylls shows us how to survive in some of the most extreme environments on the planet. Bear explains exactly what he’s doing while doing it which makes learning new phrases quite easy. That said, he does use a lot of British phrases, which may be unfamiliar, and therefore will make it a bit harder to follow. What we like is that he explains his plans both before and while undertaking them. A great way to master “be going to” for future plans.

Our Planet: A series of nature documentaries presented by the U.K.’s most prized possession, Sir David Attenborough. In fact, anything by David Attenborough is fantastic television. He presents facts about animals and their history, so he usually talks in the present tenses. Most of the series is footage of animals. When he does speak, it’s slow and full of adjectives and vocabulary related to animals and environmental issues.

Countdown: Contestants compete in games of lexical dexterity and numerical agility to win a dictionary and a teapot. There’s lots of very polite British conversation. Contestants stories can be complex but everybody talks in a slow relaxed way. It’s a great programme for building vocabulary and improving spelling. You can play along even if you have a very basic level of English.

For an added bit of grown-up humour (+18) and a higher level of English try 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown, us Brits find it hilarious.
16+ años
The Royle Family: Sigue las riñas de una familia de clase trabajadora mientras beben té, comen pan tostado y ven la tele. El programa está lleno de las conversaciones típicas tales como, quejarse, cotillear y tomarse el pelo uno al otro. Aunque hablan un dialecto norteño, hablan despacio la mayoría del tiempo, así que es fácil de seguir y aprender frases nuevas.

Location, Location, Location: Un programa inmobiliario que ayuda a la gente comprar la casa de sus sueños. Oímos una variedad de acentos y un montón de vocabulario cotidiano que cualquier estudiante de inglés entenderá a un cierto grado. Peaky Blinders: El jefe del crimen Tommy Shelby intenta crear un impero para él y su familia en Birmingham en los años 20. Por suerte el acento de Birmingham no es fuerte, de ahí que es relativamente fácil de entender. Además, la serie tiene una trama muy emocionante, llena de suspenso y fácil de seguir. Es más, la gente británica se vuelve loca por Tommy Shelby. Sí, hay un poco de lenguaje fuerte y violencia a lo largo de la serie, por lo tanto, te recomendamos que la veas de antemano para decidir si es apropiada para tu adolescente.

The Royle Family: Follow the bickering of a working-class family while they drink tea, eat toast and watch the tele. The programme is full of the typical family conversations such as complaining, gossiping and taking the mick out of each other. Although they speak a northern dialect, they speak slowly most of the time, so it’s easy to follow and learn some new phrases.

Location, Location, Location: A property programme that helps people buy their dream homes. We hear a range of accents and a lot of everyday vocabulary that any English student will understand to a certain degree. We particularly like how you see the rooms and gardens as they are being described both by the presenter and the guests.

Would I Lie to You?: 2 teams of comedians go head-to-head to try to convince the other team that they are not lying. This is a great programme to improve storytelling, the use of the past tenses, listening for detail and experiencing British humour. Will you be able to tell who’s lying?

First Dates: The restaurant that opens its doors to people who are looking for love. The programme revolves around people talking about themselves and asking questions about their dates. There are lots of regional accents and phrases. Similarly, the contestants can talk quickly, but the closeups on the dates’ faces make it easy to see if the date is going well or not.

Peaky Blinders: Crime boss Tommy Shelby tries to create an empire for himself and his family in 1920s Birmingham. Luckily the Birmingham accent isn’t a strong one, so it’s realively easy to understand. Simillarly, the series has got a storyline that’s exciting, full of suspense and easy to follow. What’s more, British people go crazy for The Peaky Blinders. There is some strong language and violence throughout the series, so we recommend watching it yourself before deciding if it’s suitable for your teen.

Encontrareis tanto acentos como nuevo vocabulario y aprenderás un poco de gramática nueva también. Todo eso mientras estáis disfrutando un rato de calma juntos.

Strictly Come Dancing: Rutinas de baile deslumbrantes, vestuarios llamativos y bailes desastrosos de celebridades poco conocidas. Antes de cada baile los concursantes hablan de cómo lo han preparado durante la semana y de cualquier drama que ha ocurrido. Después vemos los bailes. Unos son excelentes y otros son catastróficos. Directamente después, los jueces evalúan la actuación usando muchos adjetivos extravagantes para hablar de las partes del cuerpo y como se mueven.

The Great British Bake Off: Los mejores pasteleros aficionados del Reino Unido compiten para probar sus habilidades al hornear e impresionar a los jueces. The Repair Shop: A workshop filled with master craftspeople who lovingly restore family treasures. We hear loving memories about the objects and their histories. Experts then explain what they have done, or what they are going to do, to the objects throughout the restoration process. There’s lots of new vocabulary about machines, methods and materials too.

CBeebies Bedtime Stories: Cuddle up for a different story every night read by celebrities including Tom Hardy, The Dutchess of Cambridge and Harry Styles. You’ll find new accents, new vocabulary and a bit of new grammar too. All this while you’re enjoying some calm quality time together.

Strictly Come Dancing: Dazzling routines, flamboyant costumes and dancing disasters by C-list celebrities. Before each dance the contestants talk about how they’ve prepared that week and any dramas that have happened. We then see the dances. Some are brilliant and others are disastrous. Directly after, the judges dissect the performance by using lots of flamboyant adjectives to talk about parts of the body and how they move.

The Great British Bake Off: Britain’s best amateur bakers compete to prove their baking skills and impress judges. There’s a lot of food vocabulary, adjectives and comparatives. The tasks are explained clearly, the judges talk about what they expect, we listen to the contestants panic and then their food is evaluated.

5 consejos de cómo se ve la televisión en inglés con tu niño
Hazlo agradable: Si se convierte en una lata, tu hijo no querrá continuar haciéndolo.
La presión debe ser cero: Si no entiende todo, es normal. Pregúntale lo que le gustó del programa en lugar de los detalles específicos (eso lo guardaremos para las clases de inglés).
Pausa, Rebobina, Repite: Para la escena, resuelve qué significan las palabras, vuélvelo a ver. Déjale ver el capítulo 20 veces si quiere.
Sé amable: No aprendemos cosas de un día para otro. Los acentos son complicados y lleva tiempo acostumbrarse a nuevas actividades.
Elogio: Siempre di lo orgulloso que estás de que vea la tele en inglés. Alabar el esfuerzo motiva mucho más fuerte que alabar el logro.

Zero pressure: If they don’t understand everything, it’s normal. Ask them what they liked about the programme, not for specific details (we’ll save that for English class).
Pause, Rewind, Repeat: Stop the scene, find out what words mean, watch it again. Let them watch the episode 20 times if they want to.
Be kind: We don’t learn things overnight. Accents are tricky and it takes time to get used to new activities.
Praise: Always say how proud you are that they watch TV in English. Praising effort is a much stronger motivator than praising achievement.
